The Pentax PF-85EDA RA 85 mm Spotting Scope is made in Japan and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical elements to effectively minimize chromatic aberrations and produce high contrast, sharp, color rich images. This quality spotting scope, which is perfect for bird watching, nature & astronomy observations and more, also features a full multi-coating on all optical elements and a phase-coated roof prism. This model of the PF-85EDA comes with the 8mm - 24mm Zoom Eyepiece, a fitted case, and caps for both ends.
Despite its large 85 mm objective lens, the Pentax PF-85EDA spotting scope is designed to be compact and highly portable. This compact roof prism design makes it easy to be carried to a variety of destinations, and can easily be taken on a plane.
The eyepiece receptacle section of the scope is slanted upward at a 45-degree angle, allowing subject observations over long periods of time in a natural, comfortable posture. As mentioned earlier, the PF-85EDA-KIT comes standard with a 8-24 zoom eyepiece, but keep in mind that you can also use a good quality 1.25" eyepiece that you may already own if you want to change up the magnification and/or field of view.
It is so nice to know that this Pentax spotting scope itself is waterproof! By inserting a dust-proof glass element in the eyepiece mount, it is designed to be airtight for outstanding waterproof performance* (equivalent to JIS Class 7, with water resistance to a depth of one meter, although it CANNOT be used under water) for dependable use even in the rain or mist.
The interior of this spotting scope is filled with nitrogen gas to prevent fogging caused by sudden temperature changes. This assures a clear field of view even in demanding weather conditions.
*Please note that any eyepiece you use with the PF-85EDA (including the included 8x24 Zoom) would not be waterproof, so if you are in super damp or rainy conditions, take steps to protect the eyepiece.
Other features of the Pentax PF-85EDA body include a built-in lens hood to shield out excessive light and protect the objective lens surface, a tripod foot, allowing you to attach the scope to any standard camera tripod.
