Vixen Optics VMC110L Overview

Ideal for observation or imaging, the Vixen Optics VMC110L 110mm f/9 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope features an internal flip-mirror mechanism that allows the light path to be directed toward one of two points: 90° upward or straight through. This configuration supports the use of two eyepieces for quickly changing magnification without having to switch eyepieces, or of an eyepiece at the 90° position and an imaging system straight through. For imaging, simply flip the mirror up to check alignment and tracking accuracy between exposures and flip it back down to use the camera. The straight-through port has threads that accept most imaging and camera mounting rings for eyepiece projection, prime-focus, and afocal imaging techniques.

Optically, the Maksutov design exchanges the conventional front corrector plate of a Schmidt with a convex meniscus lens, resulting in a smaller secondary mirror that limits obstruction and increases contrast while eliminating the need for periodic collimation. The Maksutov optical path results in a narrower field of view versus a similar Schmidt, but the optical benefits, when coupled with the VMC110L's larger aperture and multi-coated optics, make this an ideal scope for solar, lunar, and planetary observations, while being able to resolve bright deep-sky objects like stars, clusters, galaxies, and nebulae.

This version of the VMC110L is offered here without a mount or tripod for users who have a reliable support system, but a Vixen-style dovetail plate is included that can be attached on the bottom of the optical tube assembly (OTA) or the side to accommodate a variety of mount configurations. For observations, a 25mm eyepiece is included, as is a red-dot finderscope and bracket.

Optical Tube Assembly
  • 110mm aperture
  • f/9 focal ratio
  • 1035mm focal length
  • Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design
  • Front convex meniscus lens corrects spherical and chromatic aberrations and comas (off-axis aberrations) across the entire field of view
  • Smaller secondary mirror versus Schmidt-Cassegrain reduces obstructions and increases contrast
  • Multi-coated optics maximize light transmission to improve brightness, color rendition, sharpness, and contrast
  • Resolution: 1.05 arcsec
  • Internal focusing mechanism
Observing/Imaging
  • Dual 1.25" eyepiece holders: First set at 90° and second straight through
  • Internal flip mirror allows easy switch between light paths for the use of two eyepieces or eyepiece/imaging combination
  • Able to perform various astrophotography techniques including eyepiece projection, prime-focus, and afocal imaging
  • When imaging, quickly flip mirror to check tracking between exposures without unmounting imaging rig
  • Threads on the straight-through light path enable direct connection of accessories and imaging systems
Mounting
  • Optical tube assembly only; mount and tripod required for proper use
  • Vixen-style dovetail plate
  • Plate can be mounted on the side or bottom to accommodate a variety of mount configurations
  • Weight: 4.6 pounds
