You will recall in yesterday's email, I had mentioned the song 'Don't cry for me Argentina', which I credited
to Pop Star Madonna, who had a hit with it in the late 90's.
Well, turns out that reader Caroline Lane, who seems to be quite knowledgeable about musicals (despite the fact that
she say's she can't stand them), has corrected my information:
Here is what Caroline writes:
"It wasn't Madonna who originally sang "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina", it was Julie Covington, who originally played Eva Peron in the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Evita (mid 70s). It was redone by Elaine Page when she took over the role in the Broadway musical, and Madonna had a hit with it at the end of the 90s, when she played Peron in the film version, but that was a kind of dance remix version of the song."
